The Evolution of Streetwear

Streetwear is more than just screen printing and logos. It is about designing, expression, and confidence. The concept of streetwear is said to originate from Los Angeles in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. Stussy started selling the signature designs in the 80s.

Just like every other grassroots fashion trend and culture, streetwear has been extremely difficult to define. Although it has been under a constant state of change and evolution of style, the types of clothing produced have generally been centered on comfortable and casual pieces such as t-shirts, jeans, bomber jackets, hoodies, and joggers.

Early fashion and streetwear brands such as Adidas and Kangol were inspired by the hip hop cultures, aesthetic punk, and heavy metal. Recognized fashion and brand quickly imbibed early hip hop scenes in the early 1980’s.

The turning point for Nike was when they captured Michael Jordan from Adidas. Nike dominated the streetwear sneaker market in the early 90’s. Clothing brands such as Timberland, Champion, and Carhartt were also major players in the streetwear scene.

Many other relevant names also came out in the 90’s are still stirring the industry today. Designers including Ecko, Freshjive, and Triple 5 Soul were right at the helm of streetwear design in the 90’s. However, in early 2000, different styles came into the streetwear scene. Almost everybody was accepting the streetwear movement. It was getting hyped and expensive and becoming a high-end thing. The primary reason for this significant development in the streetwear community was because these brands started integrating screen printing to their wares.

In recent times, graphic tee is not a big deal as it once was. It’s hard to find a company that dominates the graphic tee industry because it has been over flooded. After everyone got tired of wearing graphic tees everyday, streetwear transformed into a more tailored look that bespeaks design culture. Streetwear evolved once more. Brands and designers that have never been perceived as streetwear, started coming out with products that interested the audience.

Here is why brands like Toyin LaTour plan to show the world the true meaning of streetwear by making the cut and sew items such as hoodies, bomber jackets, tennis-style skirts, luxe track pants, joggers, and leggings. Each cut and sew design from Toyin LaTour is different than the next, we aim to take all things to the next level. Although we admire the screen print trend, our goal is to find more unique ways to define streetwear and bring them to life.

Streetwear is for people who cherish living outside the box and not caring about what others think. It is a belief of pride aimed for those ready to make a statement about who they are and what they stand for. While the scene of streetwear is evolving daily, its core will forever be unshaken.
